Tell Me All! {series}- Tiffany Pratt, Designer Extraordinaire

Tiffany Pratt was one of the first people I ever discovered on Instagram. It was about two or three years ago, and I had just started to get into using Instagram as a way to explore cool feeds, fun photos, and other creatives. It hadn't yet exploded into the creative powerhouse it is now, so it was still a treat to stumble across a fun, colorful feed and get swept away. One of the things that most drew me to Tiffany's work was All. Of. The. COLOR!! So much color, and texture and fun... it was like a rainbow explosion for my eyes and I couldn't get enough. In some ways, I think that's a good way to describe her work... it's such a feast for the senses, yet still is so cohesive and beautiful, without trying to be perfect.

Fast-forward a couple years, and Instagram is kind of ground zero, for hungry creatives looking to share their work. Which made Tiffany even more fascinating to me- I wanted to know, how did she get her start? How has she been able to turn all of her passion into such an amazing career (working with clients ranging from HGTV to Home Depot to Benefit... and many more)? Where does she find all of her inspiration? I was so thrilled she agreed to be interviewed (and turned out to be just as lovely a person as her work would lead you to believe) and I can't wait to share with you... Enjoy!!

1) WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?

My name is Tiffany Pratt and I am a Designer & Stylist of people, places and things.  Truly at the heart of it I am a wild creative that paints, writes, speaks and makes all the time.

2) WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY-IN-THE-LIFE LIKE?

I get asked this a lot and I have the worst answer because no two days are the same so I can only describe the feeling of my life: I feel like a surfer.  Things can move fast and slow all at once. I can be on the board riding the wave or paddling out getting ready to catch something.  But I am always swimming.  Always in my element with my eyes open ready for the next potential rush of creative wonder.

3) YOU'RE KNOWN AS A COLORFUL, CREATIVE SOUL, WHO DOES SO MUCH (PAINTING, STYLING, DESIGNING, APPEARING ON HGTV, AND NOW AUTHOR...ETC)! WHAT WAS YOUR BACKGROUND PATH TO YOUR CREATIVE CAREER?

I have always known I was a creative, it just took some time for me to own it entirely. I always painted, I was a PA, a personal shopper, a make-up artist, a manager of a salon and creative director for a haircare company. I was a flight attendant, I taught children art and created curriculum, I took art history classes and renovated an old home from 1910.  I just flowed with my life and where it took me.  I did not do anything in a particular order. I just said YES and felt my way through opportunities until I knew it was time to make a change. Everything eventually added up to one big whole and so I am now a sum of all these parts. I don't believe as creatives that we have to be one thing.  I believe we can be all things and all the colours. Like a rainbow.

4) IT SEEMS LIKE THERE HAS BEEN A TREND TOWARDS SIMPLE, SOPHISTICATED NEUTRALS IN STYLE/DESIGN FOR A LONG TIME, AND IT'S SO REFRESHING TO SEE SOME COLOR AND FUN MAKE IT'S WAY BACK OVER THE LAST COUPLE YEARS! DO YOU FIND THAT IT'S MADE IT EASIER OR HARDER FOR YOU TO CARVE YOUR OWN PATH?

My style is very distinctive and it was hard to show that as a designer who loves color I could create within a neutral palette.  Now that color has made a big come back I am clearly thrilled and more pursued.  This is a great lesson for life. Stay true to who you are.  Make yourself happy. The trends will come and go and your career will rise and fall, but do good work, have fun and keep your heart filled.

5) WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Silence inspires me.  Movement and sound. Textures.  Juxtapositions.  Colors. Smells. Nature. Touch. The unexpected. Breeze. Light. Materials.  These things inspire me.

6) WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN BUILDING YOUR CREATIVE CAREER?

Everyone experiences struggle in any career.  All I can say is perseverance is the key. I have had to persevere. Just keep going. Stay true.  Head down.  Eventually people will see you wont quit and if they can't beat you they will join you.

7) WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CREATIVE CAREER?

Writing my book: THIS CAN BE BEAUTIFUL. { Editor's Note: It is amazing!! You can find it here.} It really was a dream. It is about love, making things, changing our thoughts about what we have and devoting our lives to making things more beautiful. Out this fall! I hope you will scoop it up!

8) WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DOING IN 5 YEARS?

I would like to have a busy successful studio full of creatives that I employ to help me make the world more beautiful through multi-mediums.  I would like to have my own show, product lines, a few more books and start a charity that gives back and helps create beauty for those that need it most.  Also fun.  Professionally I want to blow the lid off having fun in the work place.

9) WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE TO SOMEONE JUST BEGINNING THEIR CREATIVE JOURNEY?

Start anywhere.  Go where the work is.  Follow your heart and go for it.  Nothing is forever and everything is a feather in your cap.  Even the small stuff is important and the big stuff will just seem small when you get there so just enjoy the ride and laugh at it.  Life is but a dream and we need to fall into the beauty of that thought more as we live a life creative.

10) TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU FEW PEOPLE KNOW!

At the heart of all of this creative stuff, I feel like a healer and through colours and fearless expression I just want to help people, hug out all of the fear and clear a path for us all to live authentically.
