Tell Me All! {series}- Karla of Twerkstorian

Sometimes you see something that is equal parts hilarious and witty and cute, and you just know that you would love the mastermind behind it. Such was the case for me with Karla and her {now practically ubiquitous} necklaces, when they first started popping up on my Instagram feed.  I don't remember where or on who I first noticed them, but I do remember it was a "PRADA" necklace. My first thought was "Stop it, that's too good!!", followed by thinking that this girl must be some kind of creative + hilarious genius! {She is.}

Pinot noir, mid-size car...

Let me back up here for a minute- Karla is the brains behind "Twerkstorian", a line of novelty goods that are fun and oh-so-spot-on in how they poke fun at pop culture. It all started with her necklaces- plastic craft beads, in bright colors, with ironic words and phrases like "TOM FORD" and "NETFLIX" and "PINOT NOIR"... and well, you'll need to keep reading to find out more!

1) WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?

My name is Karla and I am the owner of "Twerkstorian", an Etsy shop with weird little jewelry pieces, food inspired handbags, and emoji pillows.

2) WHERE DID THE NAME "TWERKSTORIAN" COME FROM?

My friend and I were trying to come up with new Instagram handles that better fit our personalities. At the time, I was going to school and was studying to be an Art Historian, so I kind of played around with the idea of what it meant to be a historian and for SOME crazy reason, I thought being a historian of "Twerk" would be hilarious, and also very interesting. So someone really needs to do their dissertation about this. But not me. Dr. Twerkstorian isn't going to happen.

3) HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD YOUR SHOP? WHAT LED YOU TO CREATING YOUR SIGNATURE NECKLACES?

I've only had my shop for about 6 months now! Which is totally insane to me because I didn't even think it was going to be at all semi-successful! I started making my necklaces just for myself and some friends, but everywhere I went, people would compliment me on my "Prada" necklace. I thought it was so funny that people shared my sense of humor! Using designer names with cheap crafting materials that are normally for children? I had no idea there would be a market for that!

Only the best...

Only the best...

4) WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

This is a totally weird answer but helping people, and making people laugh inspires me. It gives me the energy and the motivation to keep doing what I'm doing.

5) WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DOING IN 5 YEARS?

Ideally, I'd like to be Tina Fey, but that's kind of a stretch. Realistically, I'd like to be truly happy. I want to do all the things I promised myself I would do. Travel more, be happy, try stand-up comedy! After so many failures in the past few years, I'm really trying to accept that things don't happen the way we plan them. So in the next 5 years, who knows what I'll be doing! And that's terrifying but also totally exciting.

6) WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I got bit by a strange cat, on a leash, at the park. RECENTLY... These kinds of things really shouldn't happen to adults, so I'm kind of embarrassed about it but also, it's a great story.

Duh.

Duh.

7) WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT ON THEIR CREATIVE JOURNEY?

My friends refer to me as "Oprah" so I have some real good nuggets of information for people. I would say the one piece of advice that I love to use all the time, and it's totally stupid, is "YOU DO YOU". What does that mean exactly? It means you should do whatever makes you happy, and not allow yourself or anyone else get in the way of what you want to do. Creative people struggle, we have a lot of things going on in our minds so just take everything one step at a time. Put yourself out there and don't be afraid to fail.

I love that- YOU DO YOU!!! Thank you Karla- both for the pearls of wisdom, and for making me almost pee my pants laughing at the "cat on a leash" story."
