I was first introduced to Matt Crump's Candy-Minimal-Wonderland a few months back, by a couple fellow color-loving friends (@amyventures + @rclayton, xo). I actually remember clicking over to his feed, my mouth literally dropping at his photos- The neon! The pastel! Just, the color! And yet, it was all still so clean and controlled and detailed... "candy minimal" is the perfect term. There are many fun feeds on Instagram- this wasn't just a feed- this was a work of art!
Matt is a professional artist & photographer with a love of color and a knack for breathing a fun, new life into anything he photographs. With a background in advertising, he found himself drawn to creating, and used what he'd learned through years in advertising to help him hone his own unique perspective. His style, dubbed "candy minimal", is recognized for it's "signature use of candy-colored negative space, surreal compositions, offbeat & Americana subjects, and an endless-summer vibe"- which basically describes my vision of heaven.
His work has landed him campaigns with everyone from Target, to Mattel, to Coca-Cola and more- and with a social media following of 200k+, it seems his popularity is only growing. So, I figured I'd better snag him for an interview while I still can! ;) If you love eye-candy as much as I do, you'll love getting to know a little bit more about Matt Crump and his genius. Enjoy!
1) WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
I'm Matt Crump, the creator of candy-colored minimalism, or #candyminimal. I make pictures for brands, myself, and my followers.
2) WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? (I.E. DESIGN, PHOTOGRAPHY, ETC...)
I used to write commercials at ad agencies. I did that for a few years, even majored in advertising. After a while, I discovered I wasn't suited to the cubicle lifestyle so I started doing this instead. But I learned a lot from the industry: the power of simplicity, how to get people's attention, figuring out what people like.
3) TELL US WHAT "CANDY MINIMAL" IS ALL ABOUT! WHAT LED YOU TO CREATING IT?
I always wanted to be a painter, but for some reason, I'm just not good at it. In fact, I'm a terrible painter. But I didn't seem to be as awful with a camera, so I took up photography instead and started treating my photos like paintings. I use colors in my photos that I always wanted to paint with and compose my photos in painterly ways.
4) WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
The beach, inflatable pool toys, color, clear blue skies, architecture, sunsets, palm trees, and so much more!
5) WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DOING IN FIVE YEARS?
I'd like to crossover into film, bringing the #candyminimal style to life.
6) WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I live in a tiny town in Texas with a population of 600.
7) WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT ON THEIR CREATIVE JOURNEY?
Make something every day. Force yourself to get into that habit. It's the only way you'll get better. At first, you probably won't get the results you want. You know what you want your picture to look like in your head, but it just seems impossible to achieve at first. But with each picture you make, your skills will improve and eventually you'll be making images that match the vision you have in your head.
Thank you Matt!
